This famous UNESCO World Heritage Site was built for King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century as his state temple and capital city.
The most enduring capital city of the Khmer empire, established in the late twelfth century by king Jayavarman VII and covering an area of 9 km². Famous sights include the Bayon temple, south gate and elephant terrace.
Built by the Khmer king Jayavarman VII as a Mahayana Buddhist monastery Ta Prohm has been left in much the same condition in which it was found.
Built in the 10th century by a courtier named Yajnyavahara this temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Banteay Srei is famous for its elaborate decorative wall carvings in red
sandstone, many of which are still in near perfect condition.
Preah Khan or “holy sword” was built on the site of Jayavarman VII’s victory over the invading Chams in 1191. The temple is partially restored with large trees remaining.
